ABOUT THE ARTIST:

PAT APT

Although Pat Apt is, by birth, a New Englander, she has lived in many parts of the United States throughout her career. At present she divides her time between Mexico and Portland, Maine.

Her work explores the intricacy and nature of many different kinds of relationships; how the tree connects to the soil that surrounds it, how the sea meets the sky and how humans interconnect with each other and their surroundings. Her artwork speaks of how red relates to green, and where, on the hillside, a tree emerges.

Her goal is to offer temporary respite in a society where reflection can sometimes be a luxury. Instead of offering solutions her prints and paintings are intended to raise questions...... about what we are to each other and who we are in relation to the archetypal images that resonate through human consciousness. She strives to distill her experiences as a human being into lines and forms that effectively convey these experiences to others. The ultimate goal is to impart a sense of recognition, of deja-vu, of familiarity.

In her latest series of prints, she explores questions of man' s place in society, and the mechanisms, in a society as wealthy as ours, that allow persistent hunger and homelessness to exist. And in some cases thrive. Are there , indeed, different kinds of human beings? Or does our denial of our own vulnerability result in a refusal to acknowledge our own kinship with those who are economically disadvantaged? She keeps her materials deliberately simple. She dispenses with the glory of color, and uses brown wrapping paper as a much more appropriate vehicle for the subject matter of these prints.  This new print series is on display at the National Coalition for the Homeless in Washington, DC

In addition, in 2008, as a response to our invasion of Iraq, I started a new series that reflects on the issue of war and peace, guns or butter?
